Income Tax - Can a parent's funeral expenses be deducted?
Verified 01 January 2026 - Public Service / Directorate of Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)
Yes, you can deduct from your taxable income the funeral expenses of a relative (or another ascending).
However, the fees must not have already been paid by the estate.
In addition, it must be a parent to whom you have a maintenance obligation (for example, father, mother, step-parent).
Tax services may ask you to provide the supporting documents following:
- Proof of your maintenance obligation (kinship)
- Proof of payment of funeral expenses
- Document attesting that the deceased had no assets (absence of estate assets).
These costs are to be declared as a support paid to an ascendant.
