The free choice of childcare supplement soon paid to both parents

Since the start of the 2025 school year, several provisions have made it possible to adapt the free choice of care supplement (CMG) to the needs of families. From 1er in december 2025, in the event of separation and alternating custody, the 2 parents will be able to benefit from this assistance.

The childcare choice supplement (CMG) is a financial aid intended to support parents for the costs of childcare (employment of childminder or home care). The possibility for 2 separated parents to receive the CMG is part of the reform provided for by the 2023 Social Security Financing Act, including several measures are already in place since 1er September 2025.

The CMG for each parent in case of separation

You are separated and your children are in alternate custody. From 1er December, if the child is kept by a licensed childminder or childminder at home, each parent will be able to receive the additional free choice of custody mode. Until now, the GMC was paid to only one of the 2 parents, even though the 2 used a child care solution.

With this new measure, it is not a sharing of the allocated amount. Each parent will receive a separate amount depending on their situation. If you currently receive the GMC, you will receive the same amount, and another amount will be calculated for the other parent.

Please note

This does not apply to parents who have recourse to a family nursery, a micro-nursery or a structure that employs a person at home.

What do you need to do to benefit from the CMG in case of alternating residence?
  • Alternate custody must be effective (this cannot be visitation or accommodation).
  • You must inform your family allowance fund of the alternate custody situation.
  • If parents receive family allowances for children from the same union, these allowances must be shared. You must apply on the Caf website: Section Aids and procedures > Personal life > I share custody of my child.
  • Each parent must have an employment contract with the caregiver (even if the parents employ the same person, 2 separate contracts are required).
  • The hours of care and the salary paid must be declared every month to the Urssaf Pajemploi service.

Reminder

The amount of the supplement of free choice of the mode of custody to which you are entitled is calculated on the basis of the following criteria:

  • monthly household income;
  • the number of dependent children;
  • the hourly cost of the chosen care;
  • the number of hours on call per month.
