Students: what to do about your accommodation this summer

Publié le 06 juin 2025 - Directorate for Legal and Administrative Information (Prime Minister)

As the academic year ends, do you know that you don't have to leave your student accommodation? How to store it during the summer? And if you leave, how do you proceed if you receive personalized housing assistance (APL)? Service-Public.fr provides information according to your situation.

Whether to keep your student accommodation during the summer

If you are staying in a Crous residence (Regional Centers for University and School Works), you can keep your student accommodation during the summer, usually until the end of August, provided you pay the rent. It is also possible to leave before summer if you do not want to pay rent during the summer period.

Warning

If you want to keep your Crous accommodation for the next academic year, you need to do an application for renewal on the internet, according to the calendar provided by your residence.

If you rent from an individual with a conventional furnished lease, and the landlord does not want to take over the property, the contract is automatically renewed from year to year.

You cannot keep the home if you have signed a student lease or a non-renewable mobility lease that ends in June. Get in touch with your landlord to find out how to renew your lease.

Can we collect PLA during the summer?

If you are a beneficiary of the personalized housing assistance (APL), you must in any case specify your situation for the summer at your Family Allowance Fund (CAF), in the “My Account” area, on the website of the CAF or via the mobile application CAF - My Account.

The Caf asks you if you will keep your accommodation in July and August. In the absence of information, she considers that you leave before the end of June. You're not going to get any housing support for the summer.

What steps according to your situation?

  • You keep your accommodation during the summer and pay the rent: indicate it before the end of july to the FCA to continue to receive the aid.
  • You keep your accommodation in the fall but you do not pay rent this summer: indicate it to the FAC before the end of july to benefit from the aid from the beginning of the new year.
  • You return your accommodation this summer and you return there at the beginning of the summer: in this case, you declare that you do not keep the accommodation but you do not change your address. Return to the premises will have to be reported in order for the PLA to be paid again.
  • You change accommodation: you must declare your move and update your file with your new address in the “My Profile” section. You will be able to reapply for an APL as soon as the new lease is signed.

Warning

To benefit from the APL, you must occupy your accommodation during at least 8 months within a year. So you have to leave less than 4 months.

FYI

APLs apply only to your accommodation located in France.
