Electric scooter, hoverboard, gyropod, roller skates or skateboard

Verified 11 August 2026 - Public Service / (Prime Minister)

If you are riding on a scooter (without a motor), roller skates or skateboard, you are considered a pedestrian and you have to ride on the sidewalk. If you use a motorized personal mobility vehicle (electric scooter, hoverboard, gyropode, monoroue, light moped), you must ride on the bike path when it exists. Bicycles must be on the road or on the bike path (if there is one). We present you the information to know.

The rules are different in conurbation and outside:

The rules are different depending on your age:

General scenario

An adult bicycle (electric or not), given its dimensions, is considered a vehicle.

You must drive on the road or on the bike path (if there is one).

FYI

If the bicycle path sign is square (type C113), its use is simply recommended.

However, you can use the sidewalk as long as you walk with your bike in your hand.

The wearing the headset is mandatory for children under 12 years old.

Failure to comply with this obligation may result in a fine of up to €750. In general, this is a lump sum fine of €135.

From the age of 12, wearing a helmet is not mandatory, but it is strongly recommended.

Others equipment are mandatory by bicycle.

An offense committed with a bicycle (non-compliance with parking rules, use of a telephone, ...) is punished by a fine.

Under 8 years old

A small bicycle used by a child under 8 years of age is not considered a vehicle.

The child is then considered a pedestrian. It can therefore circulate on the sidewalk.

It must respect traffic lights reserved for pedestrians. It must use protected passages, where they exist within 50 meters,

He must drive at a moderate speed (6km/h).

The wearing the headset is mandatory.

Failure to comply with this obligation may result in a fine of up to €750. In general, this is a lump sum fine of €135.

If the child travels outside the sidewalks (unless forced to do so by his or her poor condition) or protected crossings, he or she is at risk of a €4.

He risks the same penalty in case of non-compliance with a fire.
